Psychologist or Counsellor – What’s the difference and how to choose the right kind of support?

In the world of psychology and therapy, it’s easy to get lost. Psychologist, psychotherapist, counsellor… each helps in a different way, but all with the same intention – to support you in understanding yourself better.

At Someone To Talk To, I often hear the question:

“Is a session with a counsellor the same as seeing a psychologist?”

Let’s explore the difference – from the perspective of someone who’s spent years helping people regain emotional balance and inner strength.

The Psychologist – a specialist in diagnosis and theory

A psychologist is someone with a Master’s degree in psychology – trained in human behaviour, emotions, development, and often mental health disorders.

They might work in schools, hospitals, or mental health services, offering assessments, psychological testing, and evidence-based understanding of why things happen.

A psychologist helps you understand the roots – the patterns, the “why” behind your thoughts and emotions.

The Counsellor – a specialist in emotional connection and real change

A counsellor, like me, focuses on therapeutic conversation, emotional support, and personal growth.

We don’t diagnose or label. Instead, we help you find balance in the present moment and guide you towards living more fully, calmly, and confidently.

It’s work grounded in empathy, trust, and heart.

In a counsellor’s room, you can share what you might not say anywhere else – safely, without judgement, with full acceptance.

Why counselling is often more accessible

Many of people I work with say that counselling was the first step that truly helped. That’s because counselling is often easier to access as no long NHS waiting lists, is flexible as sessions fit around your schedule, counselling is personal with focus on you, not a diagnosis, counselling is comfortable and offered online or in person, in a calm, private space, and it is a human-to-human approach that blends psychology, empathy, and practical tools for personal development.

My approach as a counsellor

At ‘Someone To Talk To’, I create a space where words can heal – and silence is also part of the conversation.

As a counsellor and coach, I combine psychology with mindfulness, hypnotherapy, affirmations, and gentle work with the subconscious mind.

During our sessions, I offer help to:

  • Understand the emotions that hold you back.
  • Reconnect with your self-worth.
  • Transform limiting beliefs and patterns.
  • Come back to yourself – step by step.

I truly believe everyone has the inner resources to heal. Sometimes, all you need is a safe space and someone who helps you see that you are capable of more than you think.

When to choose counselling?

You might consider counselling when:

You feel lost, overwhelmed, or emotionally tired.

You want to understand yourself and your emotions better.

You’re healing after difficult experiences.

You’re ready to grow, not just survive.

Counselling isn’t just a conversation – it’s a process of rediscovery, healing, and returning to your authentic self.

Take this with you:

A psychologist helps you understand why.

A counsellor helps you discover what’s next.

At ‘Someone To Talk To’, I bring both worlds together – the clarity of psychology and the warmth of genuine human presence.

Because true healing begins when someone simply listens… with love and without judgement.
