Every day we make countless decisions. Some are small, while others shape the direction of our lives. But have you ever stopped to ask yourself what truly guides your choices? Are they based on who you really are, or on the expectations of others?
Discovering your identity is not a single event but an ongoing journey. Life experiences, relationships, successes and challenges all influence the person we become. At some point, many of us begin asking deeper questions: What truly matters to me? Which values do I want to live by? What kind of life feels meaningful and authentic?
Our values become an internal compass. When we know what is genuinely important – whether that is family, honesty, kindness, growth, freedom or contribution – we find it easier to make decisions, set healthy boundaries and create a life that feels aligned with who we are. This doesn’t remove life’s challenges, but it often brings greater clarity, emotional balance and a stronger sense of purpose.
The difficulty is that our own voice is not always easy to hear. It can become hidden beneath childhood beliefs, social expectations, fear of judgement or old patterns that no longer serve us. This is where counselling can offer valuable support.
Counselling provides a safe, confidential space to explore your experiences, emotions and patterns of thinking without judgement. It encourages self-awareness and helps you better understand what may be preventing you from living in line with your values.
Where appropriate, hypnotherapy can complement this process. By working with the subconscious mind, it may help you explore long-held beliefs and develop healthier, more supportive ways of thinking. Rather than changing who you are, the aim is to reconnect with the person you have always been beneath limiting beliefs and expectations.
Personal development is not about becoming someone else. It is about becoming more fully yourself. That is why I also offer personal development workshops, wellbeing-focused events and educational resources designed to support emotional regulation, resilience and self-awareness. You can also access free wellbeing resources, together with podcasts and ebooks exploring emotional wellbeing and everyday coping strategies.
Living authentically does not mean living perfectly. It means making choices that reflect your values, treating yourself with compassion and allowing yourself the time and space to grow.
So perhaps today is a good day to ask yourself one simple question:
“Am I living according to my own values, or according to someone else’s expectations?”
If you would like support in exploring your identity, strengthening your emotional wellbeing and developing greater self-awareness, remember that you do not have to do it alone. Sometimes, one conversation is enough to begin a journey towards a more authentic and fulfilling life.
